Here’s a LINK to the secret letter released to Stormreach Action News in this week’s contest segment.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be doing a series of sketches and offering up some prizes for people who solve the puzzle! This contest will be open to anyone except for DDOcast contributors, and will require that you download the U.S. client for Dungeons and Dragons Online.* Otherwise, be the first person to use the emote /kneel in front of the person whose name will be revealed, on the right server and at the right time and date and you’ll win this:

Also,1500 Turbine Points. Neat, huh? A real collectors item.

The second person to type /kneel in front of the person will get1500Turbine Points*. Third person to do this will get 1000 TP. The first puzzle will be broadcast in next week’s show, Episode 168, and will probably continue for the following two weeks. I’ll post them upon the following Mondays as individual files for people to download/listen to as well.

Good Luck!

*European Server players who wish to have their Turbine Point winnings exchanged for a game time card will be able to do so. The intent is not to take players away from any particular server or service, but for simple logistic reasons. The exchange offer is for European server players only, as I don’t have the money for U.S. game time cards as well. The use of the emote /kneel while targeting the proper person is to deal with any situations in which multiple players show up at once. In that case, the first /emote listed in the social panel will be used to determine the winner.

Monster Minute: Marilith

Marilith – Mara and Lilith in Real-World Mythology
Mara in BuddismMy research with the Marilith ended up short this week and much of my sources can’t pin point the actual creator for this D&D monster. But they do say that the Marilith was based on two mythological figures from history: Mara and Lilith.

The Mara is a demon who sent Gautama Buddah visions of beautiful women in attempts to seduce him. Most Buddhist texts and teachings acknowledge the Mara as both the personification and metaphor of unskillful emotions, and the actual son of a god doing evil in the world.

Tips & Tricks: Shopping in Stormreach

Knowledge Prereqs
The following is rather complicated stuff. So if you’re new, please visit http://www.DDOwiki.com/ for more information on how characters work and skills work. Also this requires some basic knowledge in elementary arithmetic and percentages.

DDO Coin System
First lets do a quick review on how money works in DDO.  DDO uses a simple 10:1 rule between denominations:

1 platinum (pp) = 10 gold (gp) = 100 silver (sp) = 1,000 copper (cp)

Item Value Basics
Before we can go into actual buying and selling, you need to understand how items are priced. Each item has a base value. To determine if an item has value you examine the item.  Its base value price is found at the bottom left hand corner.  This price is listed in gold pieces.

Monster Minute: Rakshasas

YakshaganaRakshasa in Real-World Mythology
The Rakshasa is a demon or evil spirit in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.  In the Hindu scripture, Ramayana, Rakshasas were created from Brahma’s (the hindu god of creation’s) foot.   Much of legends say that Rakshasas are the reincarnations of particularly cruel and wicked humans. These man-beasts are said to feed on human flesh and have venomous fingernails.  They are also known for their shape changing abilities and are cunning illusionists and sorcerers.

Opinion: The Digital Skin

Anne
Lessah’s tweet question about gender for her current release of DDO Cocktail Hour got me thinking about “flipping my skin” – a term she borrowed from me.  I can’t take all the credit on that, I first heard the phrase from my computer science professor in a class called “State of Play: Digital Culture and Virtual Worlds.” This course is focused on virtual worlds and tries to answer the question:  “How do virtual worlds reshape society and create a culture by bringing the internet to the forefront of people’s lives?”

This week’s Yak cast also mentioned a documentary film called Second Skin, which delves into the lives of three individual gamers and how their lives have been transformed by the virtual worlds that they live in; which is a film I watched myself last year. (I highly recommend it!)
