What’s Your Top 3 Things to Do During Server Downtimes?

realityLast Friday, April 2nd, Tarrant announced:

The DDO Game Servers will be brought down on Monday, April 5 from 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT) to launch the latest content update, Update 4.

Oh noz! The servers are going down! What are we all going to do with out 4 hours of DDO?! OMG!!!!111one!eleventyone!

I always wonder what folks do when the servers go down for an update. I really do hope its better than waiting around and twiddling your thumbs. Certainly not trolling the DDO Forums looking to start a flame war! A number of us may even log on to Lamannia for a quick preview while the live servers are down. Many North American folks will probably be at the office working, while UK citizens will be leaving work and heading for home or a pub.

Here are my top things to do:

#1 – Spending Some Time in MeatSpace Working
As much as I love DDO, sometimes its just best to walk away from virtual space for a bit and experience life.  I’m rather lucky that I can telecommute for my work  so I was thinking about reading up on one of my programming books in preparation for a web dev gig.  PHP or Python I think! Of course, I’ll follow-up with a healthy main course of coding! 🙂

#2 – Playing Another Game
I’m a geek and I can’t get enough games. My “To-Play” list is rather long and I have a hard time selecting which game to play.  I may hit up an RTS like Warhammer 40k, or a turn-based strat game like Civ4.  If only Battlefield: Bad Company 2 or COD: Modern Warfare 2 were on sale on Steam, ‘cuz I’d go for that in a single h4w+ moment!  Resistance is futile!

#3 – Catching up Online Social Networks
Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, Buzz — too many to keep track of!  Thank god for RSS feeds and apps that interface with this data in a single place! I love my friends both online and in meatspace, and I wish I could keep up with it all.  Everyone is so busy these days, and I’d rather catch up in-person or in-game — but alas, social networks are the next best thing for seeing how everyone is doing, even for my relatives! 😀

What about you? What will you be doing while Update 4 is being rolled out to the live servers?

  • 1. Sleep; I love sleeping long, and downtimes help with this too. No need to wake up early for ddo!
    2. Study; I’m usually at the university during downtimes, so studying is the most common thing I do while waiting to get online.
    3. Watching tv-series; After making food and waiting for downtime to end, watching amusing tv-series (like House) make time fly by!

  • 1. Sleep.
    2. Work on the Guild page.
    3. Investigate these…people who live just outside the computer room door, and persist on calling me esoteric names like “Daddy” and “husband”.

  • Dawn of War II (warhammer 40k – that’s what I assume you’re talking about) and the new addition chaos rising is one of my favorite RTS. I love the new mixing of genres; it adds personality with the rollplayer lite features (XP and ‘skills’).

I love Chaos rising – a clear improvement of an already pretty good game but it kind of end before you have a chance to explore more of it. The main game had at least filler ‘spawn’ missions. The new one remove them. A few optional and then the main chain. So after a couple of days it’s over.

  • I was… at a long-weekend LARP event! It was great fun, and culminated in everyone running for their ships before the volcano exploded. I then followed that up with driving a very close friend back to college and indulging in a LotR extended marathon with her. Good times.

  • I haven’t LARPed in ages. I think my last one was a Vampire the Masquerade. What LARP were you playing?

  • That was Maelstrom, one of the major UK LARP systems. Because it was Easter weekend (a bank holiday weekend over here, with both the Friday and the Monday being public holidays), it was a 4-day Friday-Monday event. Great fun, if a little chilly when the wind got up.

  • @Entimix I was reading through the Maelstrom site and you can play as a wemic! that’s pretty trippy! I paint minis and my favorite minis are the wemic lions. I can’t imagine what a wemic costume would look like nor how it would be constructed! 🙂
