Monster Minute: Sahuagin

Aquaman?Sahuagin from Super Friends? Or from Maori?
The sahuagin are an aquatic monstrous humanoid species who’s features resemble that of a fish.  They were originally created for D&D by Steve Marsh as a gamer, before he became employed by TSR.  Where Steve Marsh got the idea for the sahuagin is up for debate: one source says that he got the inspiration from a Justice League or Super Friends cartoon featuring similar creatures as monsters.  I did some research, and couldn’t find the exact Super Friends cartoon.  The closest thing I could find (and this is why this week’s Monster Minute is late) is an old episode of Aquaman entitled “The Rampaging Reptile-Men” (Youtube Video).

Random Ideas: Boosting Bard + Bonus Stacking

My TWF Halfing Warchanter, Anastazie Tezla is now level 10.  I’ve made one major changes since my initial build:

Bard at Level 8, instead of Fighter – Haste was my primary reason; it’s a buff that accelerated our progress for XP.  Also, we decided to qualify for the Dragon Raid and attempt the VoN quests at this level. Haste was pretty much a necessary tool for leveling quickly through 9 and 10.

Other than that, I was pretty much on target for my Warchanter progression.  Now at level 10 I can enhance a partner decently in both offence and defense, as well as myself. Here are the buffs I can give out if you’re interested.

Monster Minute: Golems (Proto-Warforged)

Golem of PraugeGolems in Real-World Mythology
The Hebrew word for golem literally means “pupa” or “cocoon”. The meaning of golem tends to change based on its context; in some ancient written works, golem was synonymous with “fool” or “stupid”.  But in certain Bible translations, the word golem refers to an embryonic or incomplete substance.  Golem was often used as a metaphor for a brainless servant or someone who is slow and lumbering.   Golem comes from the root Hebrew word gelem, which means “raw material”.

In Jewish folklore, a golem is an animated being crafted from inanimate material.  The earliest reference to a golem is in the Talmud, where it describes Adam (from Genesis) as initially created as a golem made from dust.

Random Ideas: Raiding + Boosting Bard

I’ve been thinking about raiding more often. Its a thought that I play with a lot: would I like if I went on raids as little as 2 or 3 times a week? There are now 10 raids in the game:

  • Vault of Night (Dragon, VoN)
  • The Twilight Forge (Titan)
  • Against the Demon Queen (DQ)

Opinion: The Offer Wall

SuperRewardsI was surprised when Turbine said they were publishing an offer wall with Super Rewards; especially given Turbine’s motto, “Powered by Our Fans.” I want the offer wall to be a success. I was ready to buy stuff, but the Super Rewards (SR) system has a reputation for pushing bad offers through their system. Is it SR’s fault for doing that? Not entirely so – SR’s standards and rules are set by its biggest customer, Facebook. The lax rules on offers is what makes more money flow through the system. Is SR still wrong for publishing bad offers which scam users? Hell yes!

Monster Minute: Mind Flayers

The Burrowers BeneathMind Flayers in D&D History
Illithids, more commonly known as mind flayers, are iconic to D&D and were created by Gary Gygax — who was inspired by the cover of Brian Lumley’s book, The Burrowers Beneath. The mind flayer debuted in TSR’s newsletter, The Strategic Review – Issue 1, in 1975.  The monster was described as “a super-intelligent, man-shaped creature with four tentacles by its mouth which it uses to strike its prey.”

Mind flayers appeared again in AD&D first edition Monster Manual in 1977.  Nearly 6 years later, they got an ecology article in Dragon magazine #78. They were officially described as an illithidae, in Dragon #150 (1989).  AD&D 2nd edition saw the reprint of the mind flayer in Monsterous Compendium and then again in the Monstrous Manual. They are also found in the Complete Psionics Handbook, where it further details their use with psionics. A 2nd edition Monstrous Arcana accessory book, called The Illithiad, further details the mind flayer and introduced more illithid subtypes such as the Elder Brain and illithid-roper.  The third module in the mind flayer adventure series, Dawn of the Overmind, outlines an origin story.

Phat Loots: Boosting the Banishing

a weapon with banishing

What the Heck is Banishing?  Will it get this mustard stain out from my shirt?
Banishing is a weapon trait prefix and has a +5 enhancement equivalence rating. In short, it bounces an outsider mob right back to hell or whatever plane of existence they game from.

Banishing: Any extraplanar creature with 25 Hit Dice or fewer that is critical hit by the weapon must succeed on a DC 24 Will save or be banished back to its home plane.

What are Extraplanar Creatures? And why would monsters be into woodworking tools?
Not that kind of planar!  Extraplanar means they are from another plane.  Any creature that was summoned by spells or listed as an Outsider type; this includes but not all of:

  • Elemental Outsiders – Earth, fire, air, and water elementals, and memphits of all types
  • Demons – Flesh renders, hell hounds, thaarak hounds, fire reavers, ice flensers, jariliths, mariliths
  • Trolls – trolls with red markings are sometimes can be banished
  • Gnolls – like trolls, the one with red marks maybe banished
  • Troglodytes – much like trolls and gnolls, they can be banished if it has red markings
  • Devils – Orthons, bearded devils, barbazus, pit fiends, bezekiras (Hellcats) and herzogs
  • Genies – djinni and efreeti
  • Vermin – scorpions and spiders; kind of like gnolls and trolls, the kind with redish markings are summoned and can be banished.

Monster Minute: Genies

Persian JinniGenies in Real-World Mythology
Genie, djinni, or jinni in Arabic culture is a supernatural being who come from another world in parallel to our own world and are one of three sentient creations of Allah (the other two being man and angels). According to the Qur’an, jinn share one thing with mankind, and which angels lack: free will. The Qur’an also says that jinn form civilizations and cultures just like humans but are made of “smokeless fire”. And much like humans, they can be good or evil.

What’s Your Top 3 Things to Do During Server Downtimes?

realityLast Friday, April 2nd, Tarrant announced:

The DDO Game Servers will be brought down on Monday, April 5 from 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM Eastern (-4 GMT) to launch the latest content update, Update 4.

Oh noz! The servers are going down! What are we all going to do with out 4 hours of DDO?! OMG!!!!111one!eleventyone!

I always wonder what folks do when the servers go down for an update. I really do hope its better than waiting around and twiddling your thumbs. Certainly not trolling the DDO Forums looking to start a flame war! A number of us may even log on to Lamannia for a quick preview while the live servers are down. Many North American folks will probably be at the office working, while UK citizens will be leaving work and heading for home or a pub.

Review: Risia Ice Games

A Game within a Game

blueanne.jpgI’m a big fan of games inside of games; especially when the mini-game has a meaningful outcome within the context of the overall game. This is the case of the Risia Ice Games, where you collect and turn in coins for ice paraphernalia, up to 20 recipe cards, and ingredients to craft with.

Once you’ve collected enough recipe cards and ingredients, you can then use the Risian Eldritch Device to craft eternal wands of Ray of Frost, frost-based damage weapon enhancements, and cold spell boost enhancements. There is even a suprise winter recipe which lets you craft a Summon Snowy Elemental gem.
